Abbotts Ann celebrated the Golden Jubilee with a mammoth street party, a flower festival and organ recital in the church, a Children's Fancy Dress Pageant, Maypole Dancing and the presentation of special medallions to all the children in the village.

Speaking outside the Eagle inn in the middle of the village, Sir George urged the children to keep their medallions safely so, in 50 years time, they could show them to their garndchildren. "50 years ago, I was given a medallion at school, but sadly I no longer have it - nor any of the photographs. Don't be like your MP. Look after both and in 50 years there will be real interest in them."
Sir George added that the Jubilee had kept the tradition of street parties alive. "We are good at giving parties for friends and families; but the art of a good street party will die out if they are not held regularly. Abbotts Ann has shown us all how it should be done."

The day was organised by a team led by Liz Dell, and kept in order by the Town Crier.
