Sir George welcomes Government climb down on Care Homes
24 Jul 2002
A fortnight after Sir George spoke in the House of Commons on Care Homes (see new item July 8th), the Government have responded to one of his requests.
In a statement to the House on July 23rd, Alan Milburn - the Health Secretary - said he was consulting on an amended set of environmental standards with less restrictive rules on single rooms, lifts and baths.
"I very much welcome this belated flexibility; I have been telling the Government for some time that we will lose even more care homes if the Government piles on ever higher requirements, without letting the homes increase their fees to pay for them."
