Sir George responds to Greenham Common decision
2 Sep 2002
Sir George said he was of course disappointed at the decision by West Berkshire to give the go-ahead for the Sainsbury's depot, but he wanted to congratulate all those involved in the campaign leading up to the meeting and on their presentations at it.
"That campaign succeeded in changing the design of the building and inserting a number of helpful conditions. It mobilised local opinion, was conducted professionally and ensured that the planning committee went through the process with a fine tooth-comb."
Sir george added that it was his view that, were the application being considered to-day for the first time, it would have been refused.
"Basingstoke and Deane should now see whether there is a case for judicial review, in the light of the Planning Committee’s decision on August 30th. "
"I am also prepared to write to GOSE, asking the S of S to call in the application, if that is the view of the meeting to be held on Sept 6th by those who have led the campaign."
"I remain concerned about the rest of the site, and the way cross-border issues are handled; and about the implications for the A339 and the B4640."
