Sir George campaigns against Licence Fees for Churches.
28 Nov 2002
"There is widespread concern about the impact of the provisions of the Licensing Bill requiring all venues used for more that five performances a year to be licensed. This is bound to lead to a significant extra burden and additional costs for many of our Cathedrals and churches. A number of churches in my constituency have already been in touch to express their concern."

"I support the broad thrust of the Licensing Bill in its intention to update and simplify our licensing laws. However, there is a real danger that what is supposed to be a deregulatory measure may actually result in increased regulation and higher costs. With my colleagues in Parliament, I will be pursuing this vigorously and will be seeking to persuade the Government that venues such as churches which do not currently require a licence should continue to be exempt.
