Hands off our rail services
16 Dec 2002
Sir George has reacted angrily to reports that the Government may ask train companies to bid for franchises with reduced frequencies.
"After privatisation, South West trains introduced a twice-hourly off-peak service from Waterloo to Andover, and improved the service at Grateley, Whitchurch and Overton. This has meant that the service is almost "turn up and go". If this was cut back to one an hour, it would undermine confidence in the service and put more people back on the A303 and M3"
"Instead of looking for economies, they ought to be building up additional services, particularly in the late evening. This all generates more revenue for the railways in the long term."
