Sir George supports powers of Speaker to recall Parliament
13 Feb 2003
"If war starts in the next ten days, the House will not be sitting, nor have a right to be consulted. I believe that Parliament should have a right to recall itself (through the Speaker) rather than be recalled by the very Government which is to be held to account. I have therefore added my name to the following Motion."

That Standing Order No. 13 (Earlier meeting of House in certain circumstances) be amended, by leaving out paragraph (1) and inserting—

'(1)  If the Speaker is of the opinion that the public interest requires that the House should meet at a time earlier than that to which it stands adjourned, the House shall meet at such time as the Speaker shall appoint.'.
