Sir George held a further routine meeting with the Hampshire NFU branch to discuss the Mid Term Review of the Common Agricultural Policy.

"There is real concern that the new regime - which decouples support for farmers from the production of food - will advantage the less efficient European farmers and penalise the British farmer.I am writing to Margaret Beckett, urging her strongly to support the UK case at the negotiating table."

The meeting discussed the role of set-aside in the future regime; the future of dairy quota payments; the risk of "gold-plating" European requirements; delays in payment to farmers of Government support and whether future single payments should belong to the future or past owner of farming land.
