Guest speaker at the Carlton Club on November 19th was Sir Graham Bright, who addressed the Annual Dinner of the North West Hants Patrons Club.
Sir Graham was MP for Luton South from 1979 to 1997, and Parliamentary Private Secretary to John Major from 1990 to 1994. He spoke about life behind the door at No 10, during John Major’s Premiership.
He described how the day began, with officials hovering outside the door of the flat at No 10, waiting to talk to the PM the moment he came out after 8 o’clock; to the 9 o’clock briefing meetings and the intense preparation for PM’s questions; and the sheer pressure of work during an 18 hour day. His audience heard how the famous front door at No 10 had to be re-inforced after the mortar bomb attack in 1991.
Thanking Sir Graham for his talk, Sir George said he hoped Sir Graham would be successful in his bid to return to the Commons.
