Sir George visits Cartridge World
20 Jun 2003
New EU legislation could have a dramatic impact on whether it is economic to refill used printer cartridges. If the UK follows Scandinavian countries in interpreting the legislation, then it will be easier to recycle the cartridges. If a different interpretation is adopted, then it will be easier just to dispose of the cartridges.
"I am worried at the pressure on landfill sites, and they are filling up with millions of used cartridges. Shops like Cartridge World in Andover can refill them for half the cost of a new one - saving the consumer money, and saving landfill space. I am in touch with DTI Ministers, urging them to interpret the EU directive in such a way that the firms making the cartridges make it easier for them to be refilled. At the moment, it seems some go out of their way to make this difficult - for obvious reasons."
