Part of the school playing field at Ashford Hill Primary School is being developed as an environmental area and, during National Tree Week, Sir George planted an oak tree.
The first phase of the project involves planting twenty 3 metre trees and a larger number of small whips.
The project has been supported by grants from a number of organisations, including Basingstoke Council, the Tree Council and BT Grounds for the Future. It will provide the children with shelter from the sun, and access to a wide, cross curricular environmental education.
Phase 2 involves building a large secure pond, and phase 3 will extend the existing wildlife area to include a transition from the wetland area to a grassland habitat.
"The children see this as their project, and have adopted it with enthusiasm" said Sir George
