Sir George challenges Minister on council tax increase
19 Nov 2003
After the Minister announced the Revenue Support Grant settlement for next year Sir George told him that it was an extremely tough settlement for counties such as Hampshire.

“People in Hampshire know whom to blame for this year’s inflation busting increase – the Government, and not Hampshire County Council.”

Sir George asked for an assurance that the extra money Hampshire was expected to pass on to schools would be reflected in an increased grant from the Government. The Minister did not answer the question.

“I don’t see how Hampshire County Council will be able to maintain the quality of services my constituents are entitled to expect without an inflation busting increase. The responsibility for this rests squarely with the Government who are redirecting grants to the cities and the north away from Hampshire.”
