Sir George went to Baughurst for the launch of a new Visiting Tailor service being launched in the county by Jennifer Nash.
"As someone who welcomes the convenience of a tailor coming to my home, I was interested to learn about this new service, providing made to measure clothing at competitive prices, using modern technology. I wish Jennifer well in this new venture."
Extract from Mallet & Tusk Press Release.
Mallet & Tusk UK Ltd is part of Europe’s biggest manufacturer and retailer of made to measure clothing. The name Mallet & Tusk derives from the sport of elephant polo, these being the tools and weapons of the game! The sport is similar to normal polo but substitutes pachyderms for ponies with interesting and highly entertaining results.
Mallet & Tusk have recently opened for business in the UK with the twin aims of democratising fine clothing by making it widely available and thus emulating the success of their continental sister-company by becoming the UK’s biggest supplier of made to measure suits and shirts within three years. Products are offered directly to the end-user via teams of highly trained Visiting Tailors (VTs) who can be booked to be regularly available in businesses, offices, organisations, clubs etc for employees/members to access at a time convenient to them. The VTs carry out the measuring and physical evaluation. Jennifer Nash, Senior VT for Berkshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Dorset and Wiltshire explains: ‘The knack of getting clothes to fit properly involves an accurate assessment of the physical characteristics of our clients; it is not enough to merely take their measurements. I look at all aspects of build, posture, stance and what people want to actually do in their clothes. Bearing all of this in mind, I then ensure that the client’s clothes fit perfectly by making any of 35 adjustments, and do what the customer wants by offering advice on fabrics and cut’. This detailed information is then sent via the Mallet & Tusk web portal to their European factories.
Made to measure suits start at just £280 including VAT and delivery. In addition to being able to choose from hundreds of fabrics, the well-dressed man can select his own suit shape, pockets, linings, vents, trouser details, working cuffs. ..the list goes on. Made to measure shirts are a classic ‘Jermyn Street’ cut in fine cottons all the way up to WISICA and twofold 200s; prices start at £56. Made to measure sports jackets and moleskin, cord and cavalry twill trousers, as well as dinner suits, moming dress, evening dress and dress shirts are all available through Mallet and Tusk Visiting Tailors with a typical turnaround time of four weeks. Gift vouchers are available for Christmas. Women’s tailoring will come on line early in 2004.
Mallet and Tusk believe that the move towards made to measure is a natural result of the intemet in general and e-commerce in particular. Over the past few years, consumer choice has exploded through websites offering every conceivable sort of product paid for online and delivered to our doors. This has further accelerated the shift of economies of the West being demand, rather than supply-led. The result is that consumers are now far more demanding in the standards and specification of products than previously. This is now also becoming true of clothes, where it is no longer good enough for the High Street to offer off-the-peg, ready-to-wear suits and shirts in only a very basic selection of fabrics and colours with no major modifications available. The modern consumer is moving increasingly towards essentially designing their own clothes, and Mallet & Tusk are therefore best placed to respond to this.
