Sir George has criticised the decision to increase some rail fares in the South East by 9%.
"When I was Secretary of State for Transport, I wanted to encourage more people to travel by rail as opposed to travelling by car. That is why we said that, on many commuter routes, fares could not go up in real terms - they were pegged to RPI minus 1%. The Government have now abandoned that policy, which means that rail fares will rise faster than motoring costs. This is no way to promote a sustainable and balanced transport policy."
