Sir George meets local Postwatch Chairman
16 Jan 2004
David Hide, the Chairman of the Wiltshire Panel of Postwatch - which covers all areas with an SP postcode - called on Sir George Young, as part of his tour of all local MP's.
Postwatch is the official consumer watchdog for postal services, and acts as the voice of the consumer in all postal matters.

"David Hide briefed me about the "Network Reinvention" programme, which will involve the closure of some 3000 urban sub post offices, with announcements due at some point in the next twelve months. As we have recently lost a sub Post Office in Andover, I am anxious that we should lose no more. I will be keeping in touch with Postwatch on this. There are real issues about accessibility for people in Andover."

"I was also briefed on the direct payment of state benefits. These are the lifeblood for local sub post offices, and the Government is anxious that these benefits should be paid into a bank account. This will threaten the viability of Post Offices unless the lost income is replaced. I know many of my constituents don't want to open a bank account and want to continue to cash their benefits as they do at the moment. I will be keeping an eye on what happens to them."

"I welcome the work of Postwatch, keeping an eye on what is going on, and taking up individual cases as appropriate."
