Broadband Market - Select Committee Reports
6 Feb 2004
The Commons Trade and Industry Committee has published the report on its Inquiry into the UK Broadband Market. The Committee rightly draws attention to the confusion surrounding speeds and definitions, but evidence was taken before the recent eruption of advertising for services promoted as broadband at low prices, but running at only half the 512kbs download speed that had previously been assumed by most of us as the baseline, and which the Committee says "consumers evidently seem to expect from broadband".

I endorse the concern expressed in the recent House of Lords debate (see earlier news item), that consumers may be disappointed when they subscribe to lower speed, 'entry level' broadband, and that this may well create a negative effect in the market.
