Staff from Cricklade College, led by their principal Dr Tom Johnson, joined the Association of Colleges Lobby of MPs last Wednesday (19th May) to lobby their MP, Sir George Young.
“Cricklade College is the only college in my constituency, and it does a first class job with the limited budget that it has. However, recent proposals announced by the Government will make it difficult for them to keep all their current courses going. The Government expects them to charge for the courses that are not covered by grants, but many of those will not be able to pay the £800 cost. Cricklade College want to retain the flexibility they have at the moment to decide which courses to put on, as this makes them responsive to local needs. The Government appear to want to force onto them some national priorities. But I am afraid one size does not fit all.”
Sir George has written to the Higher Education Minister, Ivan Lewis, asking for more flexibility.
“I was impressed by what Tom Johnson and other lecturers told me, and I am grateful to them for finding the time from their busy schedules to come to Westminster.”
