Guest speaker at the Conservative Luncheon Club was Howard Flight MP, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury and MP for Arundel and South Downs.
He was introduced by the Chairman of the Luncheon Club, Anne Homan, and spoke about public expenditure.
He criticised the Chancellor for putting so much money into public services before reforming them, and explained this had led to the gap between expectation and reality which was doing so much damage to the Government. He said that taxes would have to go up if a Labour Government was returned at the next election, and that part of the high level of employment was due to unsustainable increases in public sector manpower.
He said he had read "Your Disobedient Servant" - a book written by retired civil servant Leslie Chapman in the 1980's - setting out the scope for economies in Government departments, and believed there was still room for substantial savings.
