Highclere launches appeal for Village Hall
1 Jun 2004
Residents of Highclere came to the Village Hall to support an appeal for £155,000 to rebuild the Hall.

"The village hall is an important resource for Highclere, and it is intensively used by a wide range of clubs. I have greatly enjoyed the Harvest Suppers held in the Hall, and the Conservative Party holds its popular quiz evenings there. And of course there are the jumble sales, the amateur productions and public meetings."

"It is well run by a small committee comprising Ron Snipp, the Chairman, Molly Breakspear, the Secretary and Ian Briggs, the Treasurer. Last year, they took a record £8000. But the Hall is showing its age, and is non-compliant with disability access. Hence the Appeal."

The hall was given to the village in 1942 by Godfrey Arkwright. To make sure that it will serve for another 60 years, a number of areas of concern need addressing: damp, sound and heat insulation, safer access to the car park, additional storage and the need to comply with the Disability Act, to provide WC's for the disabled and wheelchair access. In addition the hall capacity and seating area will be enlarged by 40%.
The cost of all this will be in the region of £155,000. £20,000 has already been raised, and the majority of the balance will hopefully come in grants from the Lottery, Hampshire County Council and Basingstoke and Deane.
An application has also been made to Biffa for some of the credits from the landfill tax.

The Hall is a Registered Charity, No. 301852 so any donations could be given through the gift aid programme enabling them to receive an additional sum in tax at no extra cost. Cheques should be made payable to “Highclere Village Hall” and sent to the Chairman at Old Hollys, Tubbs Lane, Highclere, Hants RG20 9PQ
