Kingfisher Housing Association opened the borough's first "car free" housing development in Vyne Road, Basingstoke.

"This is a development of 30 one and two bedroom flats near Basingstoke Station, which has no parking on site. All the tenants depend on public transport, walking or bicycling to get around - and there was no shortage of takers."

All the tenants are in work, and come from Basingstoke & Deane's waiting list. "I looked in the bicycle shed, which was pretty full. It shows that not everyone is addicted to the car - indeed many cannot afford to run a car. I welcome this initiative and hope that the private sector might follow where housing associations have led."
