When Sir George visited the Armour Forge Blacksmith in Linkenholt, Dave Hemsley asked him to present a crook he had made to a student at Sparsholt College.
"For the past six years, Dave has presented a traditional shepherd's crook, made at the forge, to the most promising student at the College. I was delighted to give it to Jo Hope, who is determined to stay in farming when he leaves Sparsholt."

The crook is designed to enable the shepherd to catch the sheep by its rear leg.

While he was at the Forge, Sir George was taught how to make a coathook by Dave. "I have this as a happy souvenir of a warm afternoon in Linkenholt.I was delighted to hear that Dave's business is doing well, and that there is a healthy demand for gates, railings, weather vanes, brass chandeliers and other products he specialises in."
