As part of Local Democracy Week, Sir George and two County Councillors visited John Hanson Community School in Andover to explain how young people could make a mark in their own community.
"Just 39% of 18-24 year olds voted in the last General Election, compared with 68% in 1997. This decline is three times greater than that of the overall turnout. Yet all the young people I talk to are interested in political issues - the war in Iraq, endangered species, the ozone layer, top-up fees; and they are certainly interested in what facilities are avilable for them in Andover. I hope that some of them consider standing for Parliament when they complete their education - we need more young people in the Commons."
After Sir George spoke to Year Eleven Assembly, he presented certificates to 16 Peer Educators - students who had been involved in a project on Rights, Respects and Responsibilities. He then sat in on an Arts and an English lesson.
The three visitors were asked to wear pink to help the school support Breast Cancer Care.
