To mark World COPD* Day, on 17 November 2004, the British Lung Foundation (BLF) has teamed up with Superdrug stores to offer a free Vitalograph spirometry test at selected branches across the UK.
The campaign will focus on raising awareness of CQPD, the fifth most common cause of death in the UK.
"This is important amongst those at risk - smokers and ex-smokers aged over 35 who have smoked at least 20 cigarettes a day for 20 years during their lifetime."

With an estimated 900,000 people diagnosed with COPD in the UK and many more undiagnosed or incorrectly labelled as asthmatic, the BLF aims to encourage people to visit their local participating Superdrug store or GP surgery and have their lung function tested. This will help at risk people to seek early treatment and to get help with smoking cessation.

"I was fascinated to meet the spirometer at Superdrug in Andover, and hope to help raise the profile of this initiative."

*COPD is an umbrella term for chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Symptoms progressively restrict a person's ability to breathe and include coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.
