As the number of UK mobile phone users tops 50 millions, it seems a good time for me to open up a new communication channel for my constituents. So with immediate effect those with sufficiently nimble fingers can 'text' me, on 07624 806278.
My hope is that the ease and speed of texting which younger people in particular so much appreciate will encourage them to take a greater interest in politics and to let me know their views. The nature of an MP's day means I won't usually be able to enjoy 'text chatting' with constituents but I will reply to all the messages I get.
I don't expect this to replace email as the main way that many constituents now prefer to contact me - the message length limit for text messages means that email will often be a better when people need my help. Nor will it replace the face-to-face meetings I have with either individuals or groups. But I do believe texting now has a role to play. The big difference with texting is that people have their mobile phone available all the time. No need to say "If I had time I'd write to my MP" - just text me!
