On Friday night Sir George, Andrew Hunter (MP for Basingstoke) and Maria Miller spent an hour either side of midnight at the Accident and Emergency Department at North Hampshire Hospital.
"It was a desperately cold night and, by the time we left, there had fortunately been very few casualties. That gave us time to talk to the doctors, nurses, paramedics, receptionists and ambulance men and women who were on duty."
"The amount of support equipment at A&E was very impressive - with of course specialist backup from the rest of the hospital if required. Calming people down, particular if they have had too much to drink, is a key skill which all the staff have acquired. Although there was some violence, it didn't sound too bad - with security at hand if there was a problem."
"When we were there, the waiting times were very reasonable, but on a busy night they could stretch up to an hour or so and beyond."
"I was particularly impressed by the excellent facilities for children; and by the equipment at hand for speedy analysis of the problem."
