Sir George with Janet Poynton, buying his Basingstoke Gazette from the Post Office at Sherborne St John. The Poyntons bought the Post Office after a campaign to save it, led by local residents who raised the bridging finance.
“I was delighted to hear from Janet that they are doing well, and that the shop is well supported by local residents.”
Sir George said many rural Sub Post Offices were threatened by the Government’s plans to restrict benefit payments to payments through the bank. “About 30% of the revenue to these Post Offices comes from benefit payments. If you knock those out, the Post Office becomes non-viable.”
The issue is being raised in Parliament.
