Guest of Honour at the Romsey Conservative Association Lunch at the Council Chamber at Romsey Town Hall was John Major, the former Prime Minister. He addressed a packed meeting, and paid tribute to Michael & Nichola Colvin. Afterwards he signed copies of his book, and is shown next to Elisabeth Perry, Chairman of Romsey Conservatives and Jamies Cayzer-Colvin, son of Michael and Nichola. Also at the lunch were Amanda and Arabella, their daughters, and Nichola’s sister Elisabeth.
John Major was introduced by Roy Perry MEP and the vote of thanks was given by Sir George Young, who is temporarily looking after the constituency.
“John Major spoke about the damage being done to the constitution by the Labour government, and about the problems this was causing. He also said that many domestic issues were also now going wrong, which would provide ammunition for further criticism of them.”
Sir George said that both Michael Colvin and John Major had been elected to Parliament on the same day, and demonstrated the qualities that were needed in a successful political party. Qualities on the one hand of leadership, and qualities on the other of loyalty and support – not uncritical support, but support based on independent judgement and common sense, within a framework of strong conservative principles.”
