Sir George welcomes review of out of hours service
8 Apr 2005
“Since July 1st last year, I have had far too many complaints from constituents about the Out of Hours service provided by Primecare. Before July, the out of hours cover was provided by local GPs. The new GP contract did not include working at nights or at weekends and, although the local GPs were interested in providing additional services, the Primary Care Trust did not have the funds to pay for them. I was pleased to see that a dialogue has started which might bring back the service that we all used to enjoy.”
“The problem with Primecare was that the GPs providing cover were sometimes based in Southampton or Bristol, and so took a long time to come to North West Hampshire and didn’t know their way around. Bringing back local GPs would overcome these disadvantages. I have also had informal feedback from the Ambulance Service that there has been additional pressure on them, after the new contract was introduced."
"I hope the new contract will produce a more locally-based and responsive service."
