Sir George cuts the tape at Vernham Dean Gillum’s Primary School. The Head, Mrs Pat Horne, is on the left of the picture. Estelle Frost, the teacher who helped the children with the garden, is in the left of the children.
Sir George was formally opening the Millennium Garden, which had been planned and planted by the children, with help from staff and parents.
“The school had converted some underused open space into a garden to commemorate the Millennium. It was well thought-out, and one parent had generously donated a traditional garden pump to lend some atmosphere. The day could not have been better chosen as the daffodils were in full bloom. The children had also made wishes, which they wrote down tied to a tree - mature wishes about world peace and saving the environment.”
After the ceremony, Sir George joined parents, staff, governors and children for tea. He pledged his support for the school in their campaign for better premises.
