With Sir George at the “Save our Countryside” Rally at Oakley Village Hall were, from the left, Cllr Andrew Baxter (from Test Valley District Council), Cllr Phil Heath (Opposition Leader, Basingstoke and Deane) Edward Dawson (Vice Chairman, CPRE South East Region) – the principal speaker – and Cllr David Kirk from Hampshire County Council.
A well-attended meeting unanimously passed a resolution which said “This public meeting in Oakley is deeply disturbed by the potentially huge scale of development pressures reflected in the regional guidance; is much heartened to hear the new changes to Planning Guidance (PPG3) in particular, the sequential approach to selecting housing sites which should reduce to almost nil the need for green field sites; and believes that the Hampshire Structure Plan must now be modified to remove the need for any large green field sites (MDA) before it is formally adopted.”
The meeting heard that “predict and provide” had not really been abandoned; that the mood of the public was changing and so was what Ministers said. But in the meantime, the planning machine ploughed on regardless.
