The bridge leading to the Silk Mill in Whitchurch was vandalised recently, and the Royal Engineers stepped into the breach and repaired it.
Sir George was asked to re-open the bridge, but when the General Election intervened, the rules did not allow him to appear in a picture with members of the Armed Forces. So Lady Young stepped in and was photographed by the local paper with the Trustees of the Silk Mill, the General Manager Stephen Bryer and a squad of Royal Engineers from Northern Ireland, where they are based in County Antrim.
"It was very generous of them to repair the bridge so professionally and so quickly; and I hope this will enable the Silk Mill to have a record season. Major Neil Young, no relation, and his team did a first class job."
In keeping with Ministry of Defence rules, the picture of the soldiers does not appear on the website. Sir George, the Trustees, Lady Young and Stephen Bryer are there instead.
