Less than 12 hours after being declared the winner at the General Election, George and Aurelia were attending their first constituency duty.
"Vernham Dean Gillum's Primary School held a street party to commemorate VE day. The children sang World War Two songs, which they knew better than their parents, ran egg-and-spoon and three-legged races, and had an open-air tea party in true street party
fashion. The Head Stephen Bennett played the piano, and the staff dressed up for the occasion."
"Talking to the teachers, I was impressed by the sensitive way they had told the children about the war and the horrors of the concentration camps. This school event was well supported by the village - which is proud to have one of the best schools in Hampshire within it. "
