"Dr Ishak of Covenant Healthcare has asked me to put his letter to me on my website and I am doing this."
"I will be keeping a very close watch on what happens next, but was pleased to hear that Covenant look forward to working with the local community in relation to their submission."
The text of the letter from Dr Ishak is below:
9 May 2005
Dear Sir George
Rothsay Hotel, Andover
Following the local reaction to our planning submission to convert the derelict Rothsay Hotel into a secure psychiatric unit, the Board of Covenant has taken the decision to withdraw the CU1Tent application.
We do intend to resubmit an application to use the site as a psychiatric facility, but we are conscious of the concerns raised by members of the local community. We will be making clear in our re-submission precisely what types of psychiatric care we would cater for, namely:
• People with eating disorders
• Children and Adolescents
• Females with personality disorders
We are convinced that there is a local need for such services, notwithstanding existing provision. In addition, we believe that the unit will offer employment opportunities for local people; not only for clinical staff but also for support staff across a variety of areas, such as administration and catering.
The local community has been vociferous in its wish not to have a psychiatric unit here along the lines of our original planning application, but I would hope through dialogue with the local community and the planning authorities to provide a unit which locals are not only accepting of, but proud of.
We look forward to working with the local community in relation to our re- submission.
I should be grateful if you would consider this an open letter to be published on your website, and forwarded to any interested party.
Dr M Ishak
