"Helen Barnes has been campaigning for improved road safety in Winchester Road - particularly on behalf of parents who walk with their children to the Anton Schools. The location of the existing pedestrian crossing - and the absence of proper signs - makes the crossing near the junction with Old Winton Road hazardous."
"To get a better idea of the problem - and the solutions - County Cllr David Kirk and I met Helen and many of the parents on site. Those we met would like the crossing moved further south, near Humberstone Road. This would give drivers a better sight of the crossing - and the pavement is also wider on that stretch of Winchester Rd. Drivers accelerate away from the roundabout, and don't see people waiting to cross until they are almost on top of them."
"The Head of Anton Infants School joined the meeting; she is encouraging parents to walk to school to reduce the amount of traffic onthe roads, but she finds that parents are deterred from doing this by the hazards of crossing Winchester Road."
"David and I are looking at a range of solutions - installing a pelican crossing, or installing a second crossing nearer the schools."
