Sir George and local Councillor Terry Faulkner looked in on residents in Manse Lane to discuss the controversial planning application to develop some open space in the middle of a conservation area and demolish two buildings.
"Amanda Bell and Jim Anscombe have done a good job in highlighting the arguments against the development, and I was delighted to hear that, if the application is not withdrawn, it will be rejected."
Sir George said that problems in Manse Lane were replicated elsewhere. "John Prescott is driving up densities in Hampshire - but this can result in inappropriate development. I want decent homes for everyone in the county, and this can be achieved without destroying the conservation areas that we have."
Sir George said he was not opposed to some redevelopment on the site, but it should be confined to the existing footprint; be in keeping with the other buildings in the area; and proceed after consultation and agreement with local residents."
