Sir George disappointed that Ken Clarke drops out of the Leadership contest
18 Oct 2005
Sir George said he was disappointed that the man he proposed as leader of the party was knocked out in the first round.
"Ken was a popular candidate amongst members of my North West Hants constituency party, and they will be sad they won't have an opportunity to vote for him. I am also concerned at the impact this will have on people who haven't voted Conservative - particularly floating voters. All the evidence I have seen shows that Ken was the candidate most likely to win their support - and without their support we can't win."
"I will now reflect on whom to support in the remaining rounds. David Cameron has asked for a meeting and I hope to see him soon."
