A plaque to commemorate the passage of the Trafalgar Despatch was unveiled by the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane in Overton.
Overton was the sixteenth staging post where Captain Lapenotiere changed horses on his way from Falmouth to Whitehall - a total of 271 miles covered in 35 hours. He arrived in Overton at 7pm on November 5th 1805, spent £1 - presumably for refreshments and the hire of new horses - and left for Basingstoke.
The High Sheriff of Hampshire, Sir Miles Rivett-Carnac and Admiral John Laing officiated, handing a copy of the despatch to Cllr Paula Baker.
