At 6.30 in the morning, Sir George looked in on Andover Sorting Office. "This was an early start for me, but the postmen and women had been there since 5am, sorting the mail before doing their rounds."
"The impact of internet shopping was clearly visible, with hundreds of packets from Amazon and the like. This means heavier loads for the Royal Mail but those I spoke to realised that they had to be competitive in a changing market."

Sir George said there was concern at the impact on Royal Mail of opening up deliveries to all comers. "They are worried that some of the non time-senstive material might be hived off the people working part-time who do the deliveries and undercut Royal Mail, who have to provide a universal service within defined time limits. I will be keeping a close watch on this in Parliament."
