The student directors of Outline, a Young Enterprise company formed by Year 11 students at John Hanson Community School(1)gave a short presentation about their company’s achievements and aims at a Board Meeting attended by their local MP, Sir George Young.

The fifteen year old students formed the business in late 2005, under the auspices of the Young Enterprise(2) organisation. Called Outline. Their first success was to design, produce and sell Christmas cards, and they are following up with designs for Valentines Day and Mothers’ Day cards.

The members of the Board are:

Sarah Leet - Managing Director
Jo Knight - Finance Director
Shaun Johnson - Sales Director
Kirsty Roach - Marketing Director
Jason Papp - HR Director

Outline is now manufacturing and selling an extended range of products including hand made ear-rings and CD clocks. The products are sold at School events and the new range will also be on wider distribution – offered for sale via local businesses.

Sir George Young, a staunch advocate of the Young Enterprise initiative, was delighted to show his support for Outline. “I have heard good things about Outline and coming here to meet them, to see the products and hear of their plans for the company is a great thrill for me. I am certain that the business will prosper under their guidance and that learning how to run a business will stand them in good stead when they enter the job market. “

Sarah Leet, the Managing Director of Outline stated: “The Board of Directors looked at a number of business ideas. We chose to produce and sell products that we could manufacture. We’re constantly learning about how to run the business and the early success we enjoyed with our Christmas cards has given us the impetus to channel our abilities into adding new products.”

The Outline board is assisted by Tim Griffiths, Link Teacher, at John Hanson school and by the Business Advisers Brenda Locke of Datacounts and Simon Smallbone of Skala Marketing.com.

Simon Smallbone, stated: “Brenda and I, as Business Advisers, are very pleased that we can share our experience and knowledge of the business world with Outline. It is a pleasure to see the students picking up the reins with such enthusiasm and skill.”

Tim Griffiths, summed up: “The Directors of Outline have thrown themselves into running the company with great enthusiasm and are absorbing business knowledge very quickly. Each Director brings a different skill to the Board which gives a strong base on which to build their company.”
