Sir George said he was disappointed that Mid-Hants PCT had said no to his suggestion that they re-advertise the New Street Medical Centre, but this time with more generous funding than on the previous occasion.
"We were not asking for an open-ended subsidy for New Street, but for some transitional funding for a year to enable it to be taken over and avoid the cost and disruption of dispersing all the patients. I suggested £70,000 for a year, but I understands that the PCT were unable to find this sum."

Sir George said he was concerned that dispersing patients to other practices would be very disruptive, and risked putting additional pressures on the other Andover practices which, in the short term, they might not be able to absorb."

Sir George paid tribute to the campaign by Roger Pullen, Debbie Cattell and others who had tried to save New Street. "I am taking some advice to see whether any steps remain open to try to save the practice."
