Sir George saw at first hand an example of rural diversification, when he formally opened a new storage facility at Finkley, converted from a barn.
"A year ago, there would have been cows here, but with the changing pattern of support for farming, many farms have had to diversify. I commend what Andrew Hughes has done, in preserving the outside facade of the building, and putting inside a large number of containers which people can use for storage inside the building. Typically, those moving home may need to store their furniture for a period of time, and each container can hold the contents of an average home. And business may want to store archived documents in a facility they can access at times to suit them."
From the road - or from Andover - you wil not notice much difference; but the change will help to secure the future of the farm. Andrew is planning to enter the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, which puts a premium on respect for the environment."
