Basingstoke Video Film Makers showed a video they made of the design and manufacture of a new cope for the Bishop of Basingstoke.
The video "Angels' Wings and Such Things" was shown at the Central Studio at Queen Mary's College, Basingstoke during a programme dedicated to the work of Atherton Harrison. The programme was introduced by the College Principal, Stephen Preedy, and in the audeince were the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Mary Fagan, The Deputy Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Warwick Lovegrove, the Bishop of Basingstoke, Rt Rev Trevor Willmott, and Sir George and Lady Young.
Atherton Harrison, now 90, had a successful career in theatre design and founded a museum in Devon which displays dress and costume from the 17th to early 20th century. She lives in North Waltham and a film about her work "Fame and Fashion" was also shown.
She was commissioned by churches in Rev Michael Kenning's benefice to design a cope for the Bishop, hassocks for the pews, and altar cloths. These were on display at QMC.
"This was a fascinating evening - Atherton Harrison is a genius and she handled the question and answer session after the videos with tremendous skill. And many congratulations to the Basingstoke Video Film Makers for putting on such great entertainment."
