Jim Tuckwell of Sandringham Court in Andover has been nominated as Silver Surfer of the Year. He went to the House of Commons on Monday to collect his award, at a ceremony attended by his local MP Sir George.
"I bumped into Jim on Saturday, while I was collecting signatures for the NHS petition. When he asked if I would be seeing him on Monday, it took me a moment to realise who he was."

"Age Concern and Digital Unite have asked me to The Silver Surfer of the Year Awards Ceremony 2006, at Portcullis House, to celebrate the achievements of this year's winners. The Silver Surfer of the Year Awards are now in their fifth year. They are the nation's way of celebrating older people who are embracing the opportunities offered by the internet."

"Jim is this year's Silver Surfer of the Year overall winner. He is in his 8th decade, in sheltered accommodation, and has made a huge difference to his own and others' lives (including local schoolchildren) by learning and passing on his knowledge of the world of online communication. This event is to celebrate his achievement. He helps school children to learn to read and also goes round the old people's homes in Andover."

Jim Tuckwell got his award from Stephen Timms MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury

Age Concern and DU are proud to announce another 'first'. This year Age Concern have selected Hampshire County Council as Silver Surfer Council of the Year, a council that has worked spectacularly hard to keep faith with society's obligations to make sure that our older citizens are not left out of the digital revolution.
