Westfield Court, a newly-completed block of apartments for retired people in Winchester Street in Andover, was formally opened by Sir George Young. Introducing him, Lorena Brown - Regional Managing Director of McCarthy and Stone, the developers - said he would know the development well, both as the local MP and as a former director of McCarthy and Stone.

Sir George said he welcomed the new development, only eleven apartments of which remain unsold. "There is a lot of new building going on in the town, but there is not a wide choice for those who have retired and want to buy a smaller flat in a development where all the work is done for you. This new development has tidied up what used to be an eyesore near the centre of Andover, and offers a pleasant quality of life. It was good to talk to those who have already moved in, and to look round the apartments."

Also at the opening was Cllr Brian Page and Sylvia Wicks, who was thinking of moving in.

After Sir George cut the ribbon with some giant scissors, Lorena Brown handed over a cheque for £250 for Andover CAB. "Lorena asked me to nominate a local charity, and I chose the CAB. They are just down the road and do heroic work, giving free advice to people who have problems. Marion Kerley, who is a Trustee, was on hand to accept the cheque."
