Commenting on reports that Government grant will only support half the current rural Post Offices in operation, Sir George urged the Government to enter into consultations with an open mind.

"This government has its roots in our cities, and I don't believe Ministers fully understand what a rural Post Office does. In villages like Abbotts Ann, St Mary Bourne and Enham Alamein, to mention but three, the community revolves around them. When we are being urged to travel less, it makes a nonsense to undermine the only retail outlet in the village."
