Harveys, the newsagents at the top of the high St, is to close on February 17th.
"This is very sad" said Sir George, a regular customer. "It is the last traditional, independently-owned newsagent, confectioner and tobacconist in the town. No other shop has the large jars full of sweets from which you can pick and choose, which many will remember from their childhood. The service there has always been helpful and friendly, and it is sad that the multiples are driving out this type of retailing."
A notice handed out to customer explains that Shirley has decided she does not want to work quite so hard any more and, due to competition from the multiples, no one has been prepared to buy the business.
