Sir George Young visited the Pelican, based in the ARK at the North Hampshire Hospital in his North West Hampshire Constituency.
He was given a presentation by the Chief Executive Officer, Chris Beagley CBE and met the staff.
"The Pelican has pioneered new cancer treatments, and then taught other hospitals how to apply these techniques. They are at the cutting edge of medical technology, improving survival rates and reducing the incidence of cancer recurrence."
"The Centre has concentrated so far on colorectal surgery, but is now moving into urology and liver treatment."
"With MRI techniques improving, surgeons have a much better image of the tumour that needs treatment. This can reduce the need for radiotherapy after surgery."

Sir George said he was surprised that people living in and around Basingstoke were unaware of this centre of excellence. "The Pelican Centre and the ARK have put Basingstoke on the medical map. My job is to make sure the Government understands the long-term benefits of the work being carried out here, and gives the Centre the resources it needs."
