Commenting on the decision by the Post Office not to proceed with the proposed closure of Goodworth Clatford Post office, Sir George paid tribute to the work of SOCPO – Save Our Clatford Post Office.
“Richard Green and the team did a first class and professional job in making the case for a reprieve and I pay tribute to them. The village made it clear that it wanted to retain its shop and Post Office.”
Sir George said he was sorry that the other post offices in his constituency would close as planned.
“It was an almost impossible task to save them all – as the Government have made it clear that reprieves in one part of Hampshire would be matched by extra closures somewhere else.”
Sir George took part in a debate on post office closures in December, in which he criticised the Government's approach and said he would like them all to stay open, but if he had to choose one to save, it would be Goodworth Clatford.
Sir George hopes that capacity at the remaining Andover Post Offices, particularly the one at Bridge Street, can be increased to cope with the extra workload.
