Sir George to back pay restraint
17 Jan 2008
"I have now read the SSRB report, which makes a good case for MP's to "catch up" lost ground. However, the government has imposed a tough regime on others in the public sector and I don't see how we can argue that we are "a special case". It would be wrong for Parliament to use the freedom which it has to determine its own salaries to give itself a better deal than others, who don't have that freedom."

Sir George, who is a member of the Democracy Task Force, said he supported the proposal in its document published earlier in the week that future respopnsibility for determinging MP's salaries should be given to an outside body.
