A new ASDA store opened in Andover at 10 am, with queues forming outside for the previous hour.
ASDA chose a "Hero for Andover" to open the store, along with the Mayor Cllr Pam Mutton. The hero was Betty Balcombe.
After the opening, pupils from Portway Junior School planted a tree along the riverside walkway, at the edge of the store's carpark.
"This store opens at a time when household budgets in Andover under pressure. Rising food prices are hitting home - and because we now have a new supermarket in the town, there will be keen competition for shoppers. This means prices will come down - already we are seeing the existing supermarkets hit back with special offers. So the arrival of ASDA is good news for the town."
As part of the deal, a new cinema has been built at the top of the store, which will open in two months time.
"The cinema, the landscaping, the new walkway into the centre of town are all a plus for Andoverians. March 10th is a good day for the town."
