The Amport, Grateley, Monxton and Quarley branches of North West Hampshire Conservatives met at the home of Cllr Norman and Jean Arnell in East Cholderton for lunch. Record numbers attended.
Sir George told them that the mood in the House had changed over recent weeks, with few believing the result of the election was a foregone conclusion, and many Labour MP’s anxious about losing their seats. The birth of the Blair baby had not, as the Government may have hoped, led to a fresh wave of support; indeed that was when things began to go wrong as potential successors staked their claim, and divisions about Europe came to the fore.
